SEBASTIAN INLET — A rare beaked whale washed up at the Indian River-Brevard county line, and now researchers are running tests to figure out what it was doing so close to shore.
The whale was found Wednesday evening in Sebastian Inlet. It took 10 people to carry it up to the beach with a stretcher.
Researchers were not able to save the whale, but they still brought it to the Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute to study it. The whale usually stays in deep water, so it will be a unique opportunity for researchers to learn more about it, officials said.
